AN OCEAN OF ROCK
LAMARCK COL - DARWIN and GODDARD CANYONS - EVOLUTION and IONIAN BASINS
A PHOTO ESSAY OF A UNIQUE TRANS-SIERRA JOURNEY
In 1973, I made an east / west crossing of the Sierra Nevada in Kings Canyon N.P. with my friend Dale Needles. These 20
images are presented here to inspire others to venture off the well beaten tracks of the Sierra Nevada to experience the
awe and isolation of a true wilderness. Cross-country travel was common on this high country traverse. But seeing other
hikers, trees and smooth level spots for our tent were rare.

The Enchanted Gorge.
We went to the mouth of the
gorge in the Ionian Basin
at 12,000 ft. Dark and
choked with fallen talus,
from the immense cliffs
above, rope is needed for
the 6 mile, 4,000 ft.
descent. Because of it's
isolation, descending this
gorge is an achievement
that exceeds any other
adventure in the Sierra
Nevada. Few people have
ever taken this route to the
Middle Fork Trail of the
Kings River.
Martha Lake is located at the head of
Goddard Canyon at 11,000 ft. below Mt.
Goddard (13,500 ft.). MT. Goddard, west of
the main Sierra Nevada crest, has the finest
view from any summit in the entire range.
Upper Goddard Canyon Panoramic This approx.18mm image was
taken from the Hell For Sure Pass trail. This is one of my favorite areas
in all the Sierra Nevada. Few people ever bother to venture here so the
reward for those who do are isolation as well as the astounding beauty.

At right, Lower Goddard Canyon
Falls. Below is the unique Goddard
Canyon Waterchute and Pool.
